Last year, Utah lawmakers finally changed the archaic law in Utah which required bars to operate as private clubs with membership fees of at least $4 for a week membership and $12 for a yearly membership. Many people in Utah were concerned that last year’s changes in the alcohol laws would lead to an increase in alcohol related crimes, especially DUIs. This is good news for the state of Utah because it clearly demonstrates that Utah’s backward alcohol laws are not directly related to the community’s safety. Utah still has a long way to go in overturning alcohol laws that do little more than hinder business and tourism. However, last year’s changes have proven to be a great step in the right direction. There many individuals who believe that some of Utah’s unique alcohol laws actually result in more DUIs.
