Senior Citizens and Divorce Rates in Utah

An interesting new trend is developing in the past 10 to 20 years. The baby boomer generation and many of those over the age of 60 are divorcing at much higher rates than ever before. According to a recent study conducted at Bowling Green University, roughly 1 out of every 4 individuals nationwide who file for divorce is a baby boomer. In fact, senior citizens are divorcing at double the rate over recent years. So what is the cause of this? Many speculate why those in the twilight of their lives would choose to divorce. Many ask, why not just stick it out another few years, I mean heck, what is another 10 or so years when you have been married for 30 plus? The answers seem to be two fold. First cultural norms are certainly changing. Divorce rates over all spectrums of individuals have been on the rise and many older people see divorce as a better option in their later years. Expectations of marriage at retirement age seem to be much higher for baby boomers than past generations. Some wait to divorce until children are grown an older or even done with college.

Second, people in Utah and throughout the nation have a longer life expectancy and the quality of life for seniors dramatically improved over the past few years. Seniors are more active, healthier, and expect more in their relationships than their parent’s generation. When considering these factors divorce seems to be a much better option for many older folks than ever before. Some seniors even indicated that retirement leads to an increased strain in a relationship. Once retired, the relationship between couples can change dramatically resulting in more time with one another that can be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on the relationship. Whatever the reason, it is certainly clear that older couples are seeking divorce at higher rates than ever before imagined and are seeking help from Salt Lake City divorce lawyers.
