Biker Killed in Hit & Run
Fatal Biking Accident
Earlier this month, along 700 East in Salt Lake City, Brynn Barton was hit and killed while riding her bike. The driver, who reportedly didn’t even try and stop left the scene of the accident and is still being looked for by police. The accident took place on June 7th around 10 p.m. while Barton was riding with a group of other bicyclists. However, she was behind the group by some distance and the other riders did not see or hear the accident.
Bike Accidents All Too Common
Unfortunately, this tragic accident is not the first in bike vs. car accidents. Like Barton, most riders take the necessary precautions and wear protective gear like a helmet. However, this doesn’t secure that the bike ride will end safely. It is important for riders and drivers to be educated on how to share the road and make sure we can avoid these types of accidents at all costs. Obviously Barton’s case is a little different because the driver fled the scene making it unclear what caused him or her to hit the rider. The police have offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the driver.
Recovering from an Accident
Fortunately not all bike accidents end as tragically as this one. The Barton family has been very strong and positive in their grieving process and even held a bike ride memorializing Barton this last Friday. In most bike accident cases, however, the rider must deal with injuries and a mountain of medical bills. These costs should be covered by the party responsible for the accident.
